From The Soundboard: 1984 Birthday Show

The fan labels have really outdone themselves this time by getting ahold of and releasing this show in soundboard quality.  It's been circulating as an audience recording of varying degrees of quality since the dawn of Prince bootlegs.  Last year, we thought that we had the best version that would ever be available, via 4DaFunk's "26" which was taken from a lower generation tape recording and considerably cleaned up.

But now 4DaFunk, in conjuntion with Free Boot Generation, thanks to an anonymous benefactor, have brought to us a crystal clear soundboard recording of Prince's show at First Ave in Minneapolis from June 7, 1984.

To say that this is a revelation is to put it mildly.  The sound is perfect.  Live versions of Our Destiny, Roadhouse Garden and All Day, All Night played back to back to back.  Noon Rendezvous is, as always, stunning, but even moreso for the fact that you can hear it.

What you have here is a brilliant young artist at his creative peak, literally on the eve of breaking through to international superstardom playing a show for his birthday at a small club in his home town in a listening experience that makes you feel like you are there.  None of the fussy overdubs that he's prone to when he releases live material himself.  A live show with his most iconic band that has never been treated to a live album and before the lineup became bloated with horn sections, dancers and background singers.  This is a distillation of what made Prince, from a musical standpoint, a brilliant performer even when he was young and not yet overly practiced at stagecraft.

It's too bad that Prince, as a Jehovah's Witness, no longer celebrates his birthdays when this is the kind of present he's capable of giving.  It's appropos and somewhat telling that he doesn't.

If you are a Prince fan, this is a dream come true.  You really need to hear this.  I'm not posting a link.  It's in the usual places that you would find these things.  And thanks, as always, to the fan labels and the fans who have possession of things like this, for brining it to us for free.

  5. When I called you ignorant it wasn't to insult you. If you were paying attention on 3/1/11 you wouldn't have to ask, "what?" http://prince.org/msg/5/352561?&pg=4

Who made you type mo.ther.fuck.er? Wasn't Tame. LOL
Prince is going to say motherfucker after I beat him at his own game. He recently sang, "It's okay, even if I lose I win." Probably thinks this way because regardless if I decide to go public or not he'll still get what I think he was originally after.

The JW Prince nut, Poetess from Denmark aka 9037355 (the numbers spell POETESS to her), was trying to reveal a secret to his ignorant fans. She's back as MasterPiece so let a moderator know they need to ban her ass, again. The girl from Denmark really does needs help but I can't say she's all wrong. She's just ignorant about certain facts and obsessed with an insane rock star who been turned me off with his insane ways.
